The Move

Hello,

It has been a while since I updated, but not much had happened regarding graduate school stuff. However, Monday was the big move day so we packed up a 24' moving truck and 4 cars to make the 2.5hr trip to Cincinnati. After a long day we got a lot of stuff unpacked but we were still not finished.

Tuesday, we ventured around a bit with my mom, and found a great restaurant called Hahana Beach. It is a Hawaiian inspired bar/restaurant that was completely open-air. The coolest part was that they have several volleyball courts where you can just play around, but they also hold tournaments and leagues, and even some professional games. It was very cool place and we will definitely go again!

After some other errands, we took Dizzy to a dog park known as Wags Park. This place was awesome! The main attraction is a huge pond with dock in the middle of the park. Dizzy was apprehensive at first to get in past his chest, but by the end he had just started to swim. He still isn't too sure about it, but soon we will have him dock diving like the rest of them.

Today I took some quick shots of our apartment for everyone to see. They are a little dark and not the best shots, but it will give you an idea. You have to visit for a better view!

The Final Decision

Well its official!

After a very long, drawn out and very hard thought process, I decided to send in my acceptance letters to the University of Cincinnati Immunobiology PhD program. I will start with research on July 1st before classes begin in August.

Christina and I are going to look at apartments next Thursday, so we will hopefully have that settled soon as well!

I will update on that process as well.

Have a good rest of the week!

IUSM

Realized I never did blog about my visit to the Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) Integrated Biomedical Gateway (IBMG) over 2/23 - 2/25.

The visit started with a campus tour and poster session, before we had dinner that night at Creation Cafe with some of the current graduate students.

The following day were my interviews as well as program overviews. I interviewed with the 3 faculty members I would prefer to research with the most: Dr. Mark Kaplan, Dr. Shreevrat Goenka, and Dr. Alex Dent! That was nice because I had met them before, which helped ease the tension a little.

We had dinner that night with students, faculty, and staff at the Rathskeller which was very delicious!

Overall, I really enjoyed the campus visit. The upside of their program is that the program includes 11 departments with over 300 researchers to choose from. Many of them don't research in immunology, but there are some outside of the Micro and Immuno department that I could choose from as well.

It is a bit larger program than the UC Immunobiology program mainly because I would come in with students who are interested in any of the 11 departments.

I received an acceptance email from the program today, so now it is decision time! Hopefully, within the next day or so I will be able to make a decision!

Until then, have a good week!

An update on the search!

Alright,

So I have had a lot of updates that I haven't had time to write about yet, so I figured I would sit down now that I have a little time.

1st off, a week or so ago, I finally heard from Northwestern University and I received a denial from their program. They apparently had an overwhelming application pool this year, and the committee decided to stop interviewing candidates.

I also heard from Loyola University Chicago, and they are still in the application review process. That wasn't a denial so that was nice to hear.

Today however, I received the much awaited email from the University of Cincinnati and I was accepted to their Immunobiology PhD program!!!!! This is a huge weight off of my shoulders, because now I know I at least have a plan for my life.

I interview at Indiana University Medical School in Indianapolis starting tomorrow so we will see what I think about that program as well.

Just wanted to let everyone in on the exciting new!

Have a good weekend!

My First Interview

So after the application process, the campus interview is the next step. Depending on the program, a few to several hundred applicants will apply, and a select few will invited for an interview with the faculty and tour of the facilities and campus.

My first interview was this weekend at the University of Cincinnati. I have to admit, when I applied here, it was because I liked what the program had to offer, but I was a little skeptical of the city itself. I have always heard bad things about the area surrounding the campus, and this made me less than enthusiastic as a whole.

Nevertheless I was excited I had an interview at this program, and was hoping to get a taste of Cincinnati as well that would help calm my nerves.

Christina and I traveled down Thursday afternoon, and were lucky enough to be down on campus to hear my cousin Crystalyn perform her Junior year piano recital. As always, it was wonderful and we enjoyed listening to her play.

Friday was when the campus visit weekend started, and we first had a program overview and a student poster session to allow us to meet current graduate students while at the same time getting a look into some of the current research going on at Cincinnati Children's. I spent about 1.5 hours browsing the different posters and discussing research and labs with different students which was a good/intimidating/sometimes awkward experience. All to be expected for the first day of this experience.

That night, we had dinner at a house in Newtown, Ohio belonging to two faculty members at Children's. Not only did they have a lovely house, but we ate some delicious Thai food, and they provided non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages for the night. The beginning again was a little awkward but as the night went along, it got really easy to mingle and talk to current graduate students as well as some of the present faculty. By the end of the night, I definitely felt a lot more comfortable in my surroundings and started to begin to picture my future with these people.

Saturday was the big day! We had some breakfast provided in the morning, but soon it was time to start interviews. These interviews were 25-30 minute interviews where we would be in a room with 2 faculty members discussing our research and answering any questions they had for us. I was a little intimidating to have a 1 on 2 interview, but all of the faculty provided a relaxed atmosphere which helped ease my tension, and make the 4 interviews over 3 hours a not-too-stressful time.

After that was over we had lunch with the graduate students and discussed our interviews as well as their experiences in the program and Cincinnati in general. Following lunch, the students led a tour of the research labs in Cincinnati Children's as well as the Medical Science Building across the street. Pictures of the 2 awesome buildings are below.

                                          ABOVE: Cincinnati Children's Hospital
                                          ABOVE: Medical Science Building

Both buildings are relatively new/newly renovated and were really cool as far as the architecture and design, but also the research labs set-up and toys they have to play with!

We then went on a city tour, which was actually one the things I anticipated most. This was actually very helpful to me, because the student that drove us offered a lot of facts about the area as well as suggestions on areas to live and not to live. After this and discussion with several of the students, I realized there are actually a lot of cool places to live and so many things to do!

Finally, we met the students again at Dewey's Pizza where we had dinner and got all of the dirt on the faculty, graduate life, and Cincinnati living! It was really a great experience and delicious food!!

Overall, this trip was very good for both Christina and I. We both went into it a little leery of the city, not knowing if we would want to dedicate 4-5 years of our lives there. But what was a program at the bottom of my list is now #1 for me right now! I could really see myself in this program with the faculty and students that are there. And now I have a much better perspective and outlook on the city of Cincinnati!

I have an interview at Indiana University in two weeks so I cannot wait for that either. Obviously I already know the city, but I am interested to see what the students and faculty are like! I have had a little taste, but I am definitely ready for more.

Hopefully I will hear my fate from University of Cincinnati soon and I will update then! I will also let you know if I get interviews or denials from any of the other 3 places I applied.

Hope everyone is well!

Jeremy

Let's catch up

Hello everyone! I thought I might just blog about my experiences for the next few weeks for anyone interested.

So for those who don't know, I am wrapping up at Ball State and exploring the next step in my life. I will be graduating in May with my M.S in Biology as well as a Biotechnology Certificate, and will hopefully be moving on to a Ph.D. in Immunology. For those who haven't heard of that, basically it will be similar to me becoming a medical doctor (M.D.), but instead it is more focused on research in the lab instead of seeing actual patients. With all of the politics and red tape in the medical field, this is the way many are going, and the field and cutting edge research are what really led me down this path.

I have applied to Indiana University (the program is through their medical school in Indianapolis), University of Cincinnati (through Cincinnati Children's Hospital), Northwestern University (Chicago), Washington University St. Louis, and Loyola University Chicago. So far I have heard back from IU and Cincinnati, and am waiting replies from the other 3.

This blog was just to catch everyone up on my life and I will start another blog about my first experience from this past weekend at University of Cincinnati!
